Charitable Status
In order to benefit from the Charitable Trust, Clubs must be in good standing and have lodged their audited/certified accounts for the previous
Lionistic year with the District Treasurer.
The benefit to Clubs may be summarised under the following 3 headings:-
Personal Donations
PAYE tax payers can donate amounts of €250 or more (RoI Clubs) to a Club as a tax-free donation to the Charitable Trust and the income tax
already paid can be reclaimed by the Trustees of the Trust. The tax payer must complete a Charity Donation/Gift Form which must be forwarded
to the District Charitable Trust Officer, PDG Donal Horgan, to benefit. The Forms will be available to download from the District Website
or direct from PDG Donal on request by email or hardcopy.
Corporate Donations
Companies making corporate donations to a Club through the Charitable Trust may offset such sums against income for tax purposes
in their Company Accounts. The Lions Club should provide the donor with the appropriate charity number or reference but no further
action is required by the Club.
Bequests
There is provision on application for exemption from Capital Acquisitions Tax (Gift Tax / Inheritance Tax) on bequests.
Other advantages to eligible Clubs include –
exemption from deposit interest retention tax, capital gains tax, income/corporation tax on their income
and property. Clubs should submit the charity number or reference to the relevant financial institutions to obtain exemption from tax on deposit interest.
There is NO general exemption from VAT for charities.
